Atypical Life

Atypical Life Blog

Welcome to my little corner of the internet where I aim to be raw and vulnerable about Autism. I think the best way to strengthen the ASD community and spread awareness is talking honestly and openly about all the beautiful and heavy things that come with this complex disorder. Finding the proper support system can feel like a grueling task that leaves you feeling defeated, isolated, and hopeless. So please join me in creating a virtual village and getting real about all things Autism.

If you don’t have a village, create one.

Nice to meet you!
Hi! I’m Erin. I am a wife and a mom of two kids, my youngest being 4 years old – a typical boy, wild, adventurous, obsessed with trucks and getting dirty. My oldest, who will be 12 soon, has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). While she may have some typical attributes of other girls her age, her life is very much atypical, and by extension so is ours (which inspired the name and creation of this blog). She also has anxiety, and a moderate intellectual development disorder. We’ve been through quite the journey as a family, people we meet are often surprised to hear just how much Autism impacts all of us or how hard we must work to get support. So, I’ve decided to start this blog in hopes of raising awareness and that maybe others won’t feel so alone; it’ll be a cathartic release if nothing else. As much as you may think we’ve attained awareness and acceptance as a society – we’re not there yet, and we have a long way to go. Not just with research, but many communities still don’t have adequate Autism support, and many people still don’t understand the Autism Spectrum.

I am going to be incredibly vulnerable and real with this blog. I ask that as a reader you try to understand every person’s experience with autism won’t be the same, this blog is just one family’s experience. I also ask you to keep an open mind before having negative reactions to some things I may share. I think the more we listen, the more we can learn and grow. Which is something our society very much needs right now, compassion, empathy, understanding, and someone to listen. So, thank you for taking time out of your day to be here with me, I hope you get something out of it.

Warmly,
Erin.
